Argument Styles

A typology of temperaments — the framework behind the diagnostic and the duel.

A teaching framework for helping students recognize and develop an argument style, analogous to developing a writing voice.

Core framing

An argument style is an intellectual temperament — a virtue with a characteristic excess. None is the correct one to be. As with writing voice, the goal is to know your default and learn to borrow the others when the argument calls for it.

So a student who reads themselves as a natural refuter or a natural hedgehog is not being diagnosed with a flaw — they are being handed a description of their voice and a menu of borrowable moves.

The eleven pairs & their philosophical tools

Each pair is shown with what it does well (strength), where it tips over (shadow), and — where relevant — where it shows up across tiers of writing (popular, semi-formal, formal) and domains (the physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities). Higher-order families: which pairs are facets of one axis

Several of the eleven pairs are surface expressions of a smaller number of deeper axes. (Collapsing them like this is itself a lumper's move — good for seeing structure, at the risk of blurring real differences; a splitter will rightly want them kept apart.)

Three pairs resist combination and hold their own axes:

Styles tend to co-occur. A student who reads as a hedgehog will often also read as a lumper, a principle-first reasoner, and a refuter — because these share the deeper "integrate / start-from-the-top / break" temperament. Range-building is therefore not eleven separate skills but a few deeper moves: learning to multiply where you unify, to start from the ground where you start from the top, to build where you break, and to tell where you formalize.

Frequently co-occurring tendencies

Reading the families the other way around shows what tends to travel together. Pick a column below and read down it: those styles tend to show up in the same writer, because they share one deeper move. The two columns are two recognizable temperaments — call them the Systematizer and the Particularist. The text's example — the hedgehog who is also a lumper, a principle-first reasoner, and a refuter — is simply the Systematizer column, rows 1–3.

The Systematizer (middle column) is the integrate / start-from-the-top / break / formalize temperament — the text's hedgehog; the Particularist (right) is its opposite — multiply / start-from-the-ground / build / tell. Most writers lean one way on three or four of these axes and mix on the rest.

Three axes stay independent of this split and can combine with either side — a hedgehog-integrator may be bold or cautious, chain or cable: chain/cable (architecture of support), bold/cautious (epistemic risk), and mechanism/pattern (form of explanation — though it leans formalize↔tell).

Pedagogical upshot

The "legitimate but different" framing turns self-recognition into range-building rather than diagnosis.

Exercise

Take a position you hold. Argue it once in your home style, then re-argue it in the style that is least comfortable. This is the argument-style analogue of asking a writer to imitate a sentence rhythm that isn't theirs. For a sharper version, pick the family opposite to your default (above): if you are an integrator, argue as a discriminator; if you are top-down, argue from the ground up.
